Traditionally used to detect and prevent intrusions in military facilities and critical infrastructures, these perimeter security solutions are often lethal and could cause injury and death of trespassers. For urban areas, including commercial, retail, transport, and residential sites, design elements with a non-aggressive approach are required. Following the need for a less lethal barrier system, Global GRAB Technologies, a physical security integrator and manufacturer, came up with the concept of an active barrier system, Ground Retractable Automobile Barrier (GRAB). It provides ultimate security while reducing the likelihood of injury to vehicle occupants. “We are not merely a product supplier, but we also concentrate on integrating our products to provide a comprehensive security approach that fits all the clients’ needs,” says Brian Cooper, President and COO of Global GRAB Technologies.

Global GRAB Technologies was founded in 1994 as Universal Safety Response, a company primarily focused on the design of barrier systems for railway crossings. Following the 9/11 attacks, as the risk of a vehicle entering a building and detonating increased, Global GRAB Technologies shifted its market focus from the transportation industry to general perimeter security. Since the GRAB system is the flagship product around which its other offerings, such as passive and mobile barriers, bollard solutions, and guard booths are built, the company rebranded to Global GRAB Technologies. “At the core, we are a turnkey service provider supplying, installing, and servicing active vehicle barriers. We take pride in our products and protect the technologies with a large patent portfolio,” says Cooper. The company provides services ranging from product design to development, testing, installation, and maintenance all under one roof. Further, a new generation of the GRAB system is under development, which is scheduled for release in the near future.

One-Stop Shop for all the Perimeter Security Needs

As a barrier of choice for government agencies, military, petrochemical industry, and various corporate companies and civil clients, the GRAB-300 system adheres to the ASTM M50 test criteria established by the Department of Defense. The system has stopped vehicles weighing up to 80,000 pounds, traveling at speeds of up to 60 mph in numerous real-world scenarios. Unlike other systems on the market, the GRAB-300 system boasts of a higher survival rate for vehicle occupants by preventing a lethal impact. The GRAB system can be reused even after impact without significant replacement expense and downtime. What makes GRAB unique is that it can be reset in minutes, allowing continued operation of the facility and traffic control.

Upon impact, the GRAB’s net breaks free from four shear pins that are attached to the lifting arms. The net is anchored to four pistons that absorb the impact energy. The pistons are pulled as needed by the force on the net and can swing from the stanchions in multiple directions to follow the pull of the restrained vehicle. With these stellar abilities, the GRAB-300 was awarded the 2009 GSN Homeland Security Award for “Best Crash Barrier.”Global GRAB Technologies also offers other solutions around the GRAB such as canopy, pre-fabricated, and ballistic barriers to complete an access or entry control point.

As a full-service design firm, Global GRAB Technologies has a team of experienced project managers, sales directors, and mechanical, civil, and electrical engineers who have been trained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Protective Design Center. In fact, over 10 percent of the company’s workforce is comprised of veterans. Cooper says that the engineering staff and subject matter experts ensure that Global GRAB Technologies is not limited to supplying a product but providing a turnkey solution that has been customized according to client needs. “From installing new perimeter security solutions to retro-fitting older products and existing systems, we manage a client’s perimeter security projects efficiently and effectively,” he states. The team allows clients to be crash ready in a short span of time. “Our security professionals will analyze a client’s facility to determine potential threats and recommend solutions to make sure that their security is not compromised.” The company also takes pride in its round-the-clock support services that ensure quality control on the installation of its products. Moreover, for clients having critical roadways, Global GRAB Technologies’ experts work on holidays when there is low traffic and install the systems to make it available before the next working day, unlike a typical construction scenario.
“With our experienced and knowledgeable team, we provide the required expertise for barrier security within tight deadlines cost-effectively,” says Cooper.

To keep up with the constantly evolving standards and specifications of the industry, Global GRAB Technologies provides continuous education and training to its employees. In many cases, clients approach the company much before implementing their project to get insights into the best design based on the budget. Once the funds are sanctioned, Global GRAB Technologies starts working on the implementation of the project. “We are always willing to help these clients fulfill their needs, and that is one of our differentiators,” states Cooper.

What’s more, Global GRAB Technologies’ field engineers are trained and prepared to service not only the company’s products but also any barrier system at the client’s facility to ensure all the security products are operating at peak performance. Clients readily rely on the company for ongoing support, upgrades, continued training, emergency repair, and complete support of all perimeter security systems.

Continuing the Legacy of Two Decades

For almost two decades now, Global GRAB Technologies has proven to be a trusted partner for a wide range of commercial, federal, military, and municipal organizations. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is a prime example of how the GRAB system is an ideal solution for securing boundaries. Port Authority oversees much of the regional transportation infrastructure including bridges, tunnels, airports, and seaports in New York and New Jersey. Due to the variety of locations that required perimeter security, the GRAB system was customized for entry denial, intrusion detection, and access control, accordingly. Additionally, as compared to military clients that utilize active barriers as a final obstacle, which might only run a few hundred cycles in a year, Port Authority wanted a system that could perform a million cycles per year effectively. The GRAB system was able to provide the required level of security as used by the military at minimal lifecycle maintenance costs. Alongside military and federal agencies, Global GRAB Technologies offers perimeter security to sports stadiums and concert venues that are quickly becoming prime targets of anti-social elements, in the most cost-effective way with a reduced risk factor.

Perimeter security solution development needs to be proactive for enhanced safety. To that end, Global GRAB Technologies carries out considerable testing in the early stages to determine whether the systems are functional and to identify if those perform as intended. Similarly, the company also helps clients maintain and run the security systems over an extended period of time without a glitch. Global GRAB Technologies has several systems dating back to over 15 years that are still in operation, many with the original equipment intact. It is a matter of pride for the company to keep the lifecycle costs as minimal as possible for end-users.
